“He Wasn’t Going To Take A Single Risk”: Rolando Romero Details His Strategy To Neutralize Ryan Garcia’s Attack

Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero has the option of fighting for a world title next after his win over Ryan Garcia to capture the WBA secondary welterweight belt last Friday night at Times Square. Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) didn’t say his preference for his next fight.

No Rematch Eagerness

Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) doesn’t seem eager about fighting Rolly again. When asked at the post-fight press conference about his interest in a rematch, Ryan said he’d leave it up to the fans. Obviously, that’s not the kind of reaction a person gives when believing in themselves. Garcia sounds like his confidence is gone.

“Whatever the fans want. If they want me to run it back with Rolly, let’s do it. If they want me to go straight back to Devin, let’s do it,” said Ryan Garcia at last night’s post-fight press conference.

Romero’s Options

– Ryan Garcia – rematch
– Devin Haney
– Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis

It seems clear that Ryan doesn’t want a rematch. Haney only wants the rematch with Garcia, because that’s his biggest payday and he needs to avenge his loss from last year. The weakened, non-Superman look Kingry had last night, he’d lose to Devin if they fought now. He looked like he was in a room filled with kryptonite last night against Rolly. All the superpowers that Garcia had in his previous fight against Haney had disappeared.

Rolly defeated Ryan by the scores 115-112, 118-109, and 115-112. He noticed that once he dropped Garcia in round two, he didn’t attempt to attack aggressively with his left hook after that. Romero thinks Ryan was worried about getting cracked. That’s understandable because Rolly was hitting hard.

Reading Garcia

“He’s strong and has a good Left Hook. The one time he opened up, I cracked him, and he didn’t open up for the rest of the fight,” said Rolly Romero at the post-fight press conference last night, talking about Ryan Garcia losing aggression after he got dropped in the second round.

“I knew he wasn’t going to throw no more damn punches. So, I just had to keep going, going, and going. He wasn’t going to take a single risk with me. He knows I can crack,” said Romero about Garcia.
